NEW DELHI: Over the past week, universities and colleges across states have suspended classes, cancelled convocations and asked students to vacate campuses in an effort to control the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. More than half the states have either shut all schools or suspended work for some classes. Some states have shut down all institutions.

India has already had 114 confirmed cases of infections and it has seen two deaths. With no vaccine in sight, the practice of “social distancing” and maintaining high standards of hygiene have been judged our best bet against the pandemic. After discussions with a high level group of ministers on Monday, the health ministry has released nine social distancing measures to contain the spread.

Given below is the complete list of states that have so far announced full or partial closure of educational institutions, the duration for which they will be shut and the major institutions that have made announcements of their own.
