NEW DELHI, FEB 27: Principals of some of the colleges affiliated to the Calcutta University (CU) have expressed their inability in implementing Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and Semester system in the Humanities and Sciences subjects from the academic session 2018-19.

The Calcutta University is all set to implement the new system at the Undergraduate level from the 2018-19 session and has also started uploading syllabus on its official website.

VCCUProf. Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee, Vice Chancellor, CU speaking to Careers360 said, “We are planning to introduce it from the 18-19 session in our affiliated colleges as it is the need of the hour. We have semester system at the postgraduate level and now we are trying to bring the same at the undergraduate level as well.

On the other hand, nearly 150 colleges affiliated to the University have expressed their inability in implementing the scheme as they are saying that they do not have the requisite infrastructure in place.

The University is already running CBCS in the Commerce stream in all the subjects of Bcom and is now planning to introduce in subjects in BA and BSc.

As per the new system, undergraduate students will have to write exams twice every year instead of once. With the introduction of CBCS, students will be free to choose subjects across disciplines with the flexibility to choose their course from a list of elective, core and soft skill courses. CBCS will follow a credit system attached to course components offered to students.

University is going to organize a UGC sponsored one-day workshop on ‘CBCS in UG Curriculum: Design and Implementation’ on 10 March 2018.
