Dehradun schools, Anganwadi centres closes today due to heavy rainfall; IMD issues orange alert in Uttarakhand

All government and private schools from Class 1 to 12 and the Anganwadi centres in the district will remain closed on Wednesday as the district administration announced the one day holiday due to the heavy rain forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The decision was made as a precautionary measure because of the weather conditions. The holiday will be observed at all educational institutions and Anganwadi centres all over the district.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has asked the Secretary of Disaster Management to be on heightened alert in view of the weather conditions. He has also directed the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to remain on guard and make sure round the clock relief and rescue operations are undertaken in the event of any emergency in the district.

The CM urged people and tourists to be careful and not travel unnecessarily till the weather improves. He also urged people to avoid areas around rivers, streams and other vulnerable areas and to adhere to local authorities' instructions.

The water level of the Tamsa River, which flows through the Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Dehradun, has kept rising since Tuesday night, due to heavy rain.

At the same time, the IMD has issued an orange alert for Bageshwar, Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal and Uttarkashi districts, alerting of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds.

Landslide in Khainuri village

Earlier this week, Chief Minister Dhami also reviewed the damage caused by a landslide to the road connecting Khainuri village in Chamoli district's Dasholi block. He instructed the district magistrate and other officials to prioritise restoration work and reopen the route at the earliest.

During a phone conversation with villagers, residents informed the landslide had completely damaged the road, disrupting connectivity for nearly 120 families. Dhami subsequently instructed officials to undertake immediate restoration work, assess the ground situation and take all necessary steps to ensure safe and smooth connectivity for the affected village.
