Delhi University organises exhibition to commemorate Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

NEW DELHI: Delhi University (DU) today organised an exhibition at the conference centre to commemorate the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. A veteran of the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army, INA) Madhavan Pillai, was the chief guest on the occasion.

Giving the message of all-religion unity, he said hindus, muslims, sikhs and christians all worked together in INA and fought together for the country’s freedom.

He called upon the countrymen to take the country forward collectively with the unity of all religions in the same manner as was done in the past. An exhibition of pictures related to the tragedy of the Partition was also organised on the occasion.

While introducing the chief guest, dean academic affairs K Ratnabali said Madhavan Pillai was born in Burma in 1925. Pillai joined the Azad Hind Fauj in 1943, at the age of 18, and actively participated in the freedom struggle. Ratnabali thanked Madhavan Pillai for coming to participate in the event at the age of 98.

DU School of Open Learning director Payal Mago said around three crore people came from partitioned parts of the Ravi (now in Pakistan) during the Partition. She also recounted the story of her father migrating to India after her mother and sisters had immolated themselves. She called upon everyone to rise above regionalism and linguisticism and work for the country.

DU public relation officer Anoop Lather said partition in any form is always bitter but in the end its result is happiness. “When India was partitioned, the people who suffered lost a lot. Those who came here from the present Pakistan region, had to face many bitter experiences. They had to face bloodbath, lost loved ones, had to leave their wealth and values,” he said.
