NEW DELHI: The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has sanctioned Rs 7.25 crore to set up a Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi. The hub will focus on technology interface development and evaluation, human resource and skill development, entrepreneurship and collaboration.

Role of technology hub

The hub will work on “human computer interaction research”. The project will study the design and development of computer technology and their impact on humans in novel ways.

Arnav Bhavsar, the co-principal investigator at the Technology Innovation Hub said it will “enable significant strides by the institute in industry collaboration and in the development of indigenous technology.”

The workforce

Apart from a team of experienced teachers of IIT Mandi who will participate in the establishment of the hub, newly-appointed teachers will be a part of it as well.

Varun Dutt, principal investigator, said that the hub provides “exciting opportunities” for the institute to work in human-computer interaction and allied areas where “national research has been nascent”.

The team would further focus on HCI with inputs from Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning areas. It will delve into the ways in which humans interact with computers and design technologies that let humans interact with computers in the field of research, computer science, behavioural sciences, design, and media studies among others.
