NEW DELHI: British engineering multinational, Rolls-Royce, is collaborating with Indian Institute of Technology-Madras on “joint research programmes”, the IIT said in statement on Monday.

Rolls-Royce will partner with IIT Madras also on a “technical higher study framework” for the higher education of the company’s own engineers.

An agreement was signed by Jayaram Balasubrahmanyan, head of engineering, Rolls-Royce India and V. Kamakoti, associate dean (Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research), IIT Madras.

Upskilling

Kishore Jayaraman, president, Rolls-Royce India and South Asia, said in a statement that apart from research, the collaboration will enable “upskilling and professional development” of engineers at Rolls-Royce.

On its part, “IIT Madras will also aim to pursue advanced research in areas of relevance to future technological and programmatic needs of the company”, said the statement.

As part of the Technical Higher Study Framework, Rolls-Royce will sponsor the master’s, or MTech, and PhD studies of a section of its employees. To qualify, employees must first clear the IIT Madras selection process, and their topic “should be aligned with Rolls-Royce strategic research priorities and capabilities”.

Such sponsorships are also crucial for raising funds, as an IIT director earlier told Careers360. Since the older IITs are now taking loans for most of their infrastructure development and expansion, many are looking at such industry-sponsored programmes to raise funds.
