DU Students’ Protest: Congress MP Deepender Hooda extends support, assures parliament intervention

NEW DELHI: Congress MP Deepender Hooda on Tuesday, August 4, visited the Delhi University (DU) Satyagraha protest site and expressed support for Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) Vice-President Rahul Jhansla and five other students who have been on an indefinite hunger strike over their demands. The protest entered its ninth day on Tuesday, while the hunger strike completed seven days. Addressing students at the protest site, Hooda criticised the university administration and alleged that an official post on social media platform X falsely invoked the supreme court to discourage students from participating in a protest at Jantar Mantar.

Hooda said, "I am myself a law alumnus of this university. The supreme court never issued any advisory authorising the university administration to stop students from attending the student protest at Jantar Mantar. Students were intimidated through a post on X that spread lies in the name of the supreme court. For this, the vice chancellor must apologise".
The protesters reiterated that the post on X had intimidated students by wrongly citing supreme court directions to discourage participation in the demonstration. They demanded that Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh issue a public apology for the post. The students further alleged that although university officials met them on Monday and assured them that their concerns would be addressed, the vice-chancellor has neither initiated direct talks with the protesters nor issued any clarification regarding the X post.

Protest enters ninth day
Hooda also alleged attempts to "saffronise" the university, saying educational institutions should not be politicised in the name of any political party. He praised the student protesters and assured them that their concerns would be raised in parliament.
Hooda said while addressing the protesters that he would raise the issue in Parliament through an adjournment motion. "Parliament is proud of Rahul Jhansla. Tomorrow, in the Lok Sabha, I will raise this issue alongside Congress MPs through an adjournment motion. In the motion where Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's name previously appeared, I will now include the name of vice chancellor, Yogesh Singh".
DUSU Vice-President Rahul Jhansla said the Satyagraha site on the Delhi University campus had become the "Jantar Mantar of Delhi University" and called on more students to join the agitation. According to a statement issued by Jhansla, a day before Congress MP Deepender Hooda's visit, the university's Registrar, Proctor and other officials met the protesters. During the meeting, the officials said Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, "as a well-wisher and guardian", had merely appealed to students not to participate in the Jantar Mantar protest.
The protesters said the satyagraha and indefinite hunger strike would continue until their demands are accepted by the university administration.
