Former CBSE academic director Joseph Emmanuel appointed CISCE chief

Joseph Emmanuel who replaced Gerry Arathoon will take charge as the new chief executive and secretary of CISCE on May 1.

NEW DELHI: Former academic director of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Joseph Emmanuel has been appointed as the chief executive and secretary of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). The new chief will take charge of the office from May 1. He has replaced Gerry Arathoon whose term ended in September last year.

The council’s chairman G Immanuel informed about the appointment in a letter to the heads of affiliated schools. “With pleasure, this is to inform you that Dr. Joseph Emmanuel has been appointed the Chief Executive and Secretary of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) with effect from May 01, 2024,” the letter read.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Emmanuel served as the executive officer at the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAI) from September 1995 to November 2005. Two years later, he was appointed as the deputy secretary in CBSE while he also worked as the Officer on Special Duty (ODS) for medical entrance exams. He was given the post of joint secretary in May 2012 and then moved to the position of secretary in 2014.

The new CISCE chief has received his MCom and PhD degrees in commerce and finance from Mahatma Gandhi University.

During his reign, Gerry Arathoon “introduced and implemented several innovative initiatives in the organization, ensuring it was amongst the most forward-looking and child-friendly Education Boards in India. This was achieved by introducing transparency in evaluation and accountability in the teaching-learning process. Furthermore, brought about many innovations in different processes of the examination system to make it stress-free and student-friendly.”

He also overlooked the construction of three CISCE offices at Saket, New Delhi, Noida, UP and Hyderabad, Telangana. Moreover, he managed the construction of the residential building for officers in New Delhi along with the renovation of the registered offices of the CISCE in New Delhi and Kolkata.
