Former HRD secretary Vinay Sheel Oberoi passes away

NEW DELHI: Former higher education secretary of the Ministry of HRD, Vinay Sheel Oberoi, passed away on April 10. He was 63. A retired IAS officer of the 1979 batch, Oberoi belonged to the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. In his tenure spanning more than three decades, Oberoi had served in various capacities in Meghalaya before taking up responsibilities in the central cadre.
Besides serving the ministries of HRD and Women and Child Development, Oberoi was also India’s ambassador and Permanent Representative at UNESCO.
Former minister for human resource development, Smriti Irani, said on social media: "Colleague, father figure, friend. Was blessed to serve with him in HRD when he donned the hat of Secretary Higher Education. Though we lost him last night , his guidance & kindness will stay with me forever."

Former colleague at MHRD, R Subrahmanyam also made a social media post in tribute. Subrahmanyan later held the same post as Oberoi.
