GATE Answer key 2026: How to calculate scores?

Calculate the total number of right answers and allocate marks accordingly, and then calculate the overall marks.

Candidates have to tally the total negative marks for wrong answers. Only MCQs will have negative markings. No negative marking for NAT questions. So the calculation formula is as follows:

MCQ Marks : Total marks (1 mark) + Total marks (2 marks).

Total marks (1 mark) = 1 x no. of correct attempts – 1/3 x no. of wrong attempts.

Total marks (2 marks) = 2 x the number of correct attempts – 2/3 x the number of wrong attempts.

NAT Marks : Total marks (1 mark) + Total marks (2 marks)

GATE entrance exam is held for admission to Master of Technology (MTech) and Doctor of Philosophy (Phd) programmes at Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), National Institute of Technology (NITs), and other institutes. GATE scores remain valid for three years and can also be used for recruitment at Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).
