NEW DELHI: The general perception of students is that seeking admission to the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras is through Joint Entrance Exam (JEE). However, IIT Madras also offers Humanities courses. Candidates can take admissions in MA Development Studies and MA English programmes at IIT Madras through the Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE). This year, the HSEE entrance exam is scheduled to be held on June 13.

The Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination or HSEE exam is a national level examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras for candidates who wish to take admission in MA programmes. As per the institution’s admission policy, candidates can get admission to IIT Madras MA programme based on HSEE score and the marks obtained by them in the qualifying examination.

HSEE Exam Pattern

The institute guidelines for the HSEE highlights, the exam will be held for 3 hours. Part 1 of the test paper of HSEE is timed for 2.5 hours and part II for 30 minutes. The type of questions in part I of the test paper is multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and part II consist of descriptive questions. The first part will consist of questions from English and comprehension skill, analytical and quantitative ability, general studies (Indian Economy, Indian Society and Culture, World Affairs), while the second part will consist of reflective type questions from general topics.

HSEE Eligibility Criteria- Overview

  • Candidates have passed 10+2 from CBSE, ICSE and State boards/

  • Have passed the two year Pre-University Board Examination approved by AIU/

  • Have passed final year examination of Joint Services Wing (two year course) conducted by NDA/

  • Have passed the Senior Secondary School Examination from National Institute of Open Schooling/

  • Have passed Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational examination/

  • Passed Public School, Board or University examination in India or any other foreign country that is a recognized 10+2 system by the AIU/

  • Passed Advanced (A) level General Certificate of Education Examination (approved by London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka)/

  • Passed High School Certificate Examination approved by Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate office, Geneva/

  • Candidates have passed Class 12 from an international country and the certificate is approved by AIU/

  • Candidates are in their final year of class 12 and manage to fulfill eligibility criteria outlined by the institution/

  • Candidates have passed Class 12 as a private candidate but their Class 10 certificate was approved by public examination system

  • Candidates have passed the qualifying exam with a minimum of 60% marks

  • Candidates are born on or after October 1, 1996

Overall, admission to MA programmes is offered for 58 seats; thus making the admission to IIT Madras MA programme through HSEE highly competitive.

Note: Candidates who had applied for HSEE 2021 until March 31 will be issued the admit card for HSEE 2021 on May 12. The result of the HSEE 2021 exam will be announced on June 28.
