NEW DELHI: In the wake of coronavirus pandemic, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is all set to conduct the next semester completely online, starting from August 27, 2020.

As per the senate guidelines for semester 2020-21, all undergraduate and postgraduate students will be attending the classes remotely from home. The Senate is a body which decides matters on academic affairs of the institute.

A week’s reading material for all lectures will be made available at least one week in advance over a dedicated online platform. For each lecture, teachers will also create audio or video content along with written notes to be shared with the class on this platform.

A web guide has also been prepared for the teachers to understand the initial preparation required for online classes.

Classes for the online semester at IIT Kanpur will begin from September 1 and end on November 30. The semester will close by December 22, 2020.

In the upcoming semester, online lectures will be delivered for 35 minutes. Teachers have been directed to divide a 50-minute lecture into small parts for better understanding.

Students have been advised to ensure that they have broadband or a 4G connection for streaming lecture videos and live discussions.

For those who do not have access to the internet, the institute will send micro SD cards with course materials. Students will have to at least have a smartphone to access the reading material.

The institute also intends to reach out to students through email, phone, or other means such as WhatsApp. A third party software will also be utilised to teach introductory programming remotely.

Examination in online semester

For the academic year 2020-21, the institute has done away with in-person examinations. “ All evaluations shall be conducted by the course instructors using online exams, term paper, in video assignments, pop-quizzes, take-home assignments and online viva-voce,” stated an official document by the dean of academic affairs.

The online semester will also give importance to continuous assessment in the evaluation process. The exact weightage for each component to be decided by the teacher.

The teacher, at the beginning of the course, will be responsible to issue the assessment policy including weightage for various modes.

To make for the academic loss, the institute has also decided against the mid-semester break in the upcoming session.
