HPNLU gets a new VC

NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 25: Prof Nishtha Jaswal takes over charge of Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU) as its second Vice Chancellor. Prof Jaswal with an academic experience of 32 years, happens to be the third woman VC of an NLU after Dr Rose Varghese, who is currently serving as the NUALS Kochi VC and Prof Poonam Saxena, VC of NLU Jodhpur. The newly appointed VC will hold the HPNLU office for a tenure of five years till November 2023, after the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court and HPNLU Chancellor, Justice Surya Kant appointed Prof Nishtha as the NLU Shimla VC on November 22, 2018.

In a first, Prof Nishtha Jaswal and Dr Paramjit Singh Jaswal, RGNUL Patiala VC have become the first couple to hold the NLU Vice Chancellor offices at the same time.

HPNLUVC-ProfNishthaJaswalA gold medallist, Dr Nishtha Jaswal also has a total of 34 years of research experience. Over 65 research papers and six books are credited to her name. Her book titled Environmental Law has been cited thrice by the Supreme Court in a landmark judgement reported in Noise Pollution (V), 2005 5 SCC 733.

Her specialized areas include Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, Environmental Law and Human Rights.

Before her VC-ship, Prof Jaswal was serving Panjab University, Chandigarh in various capacities. She has also been designated as Mehr Chand Mahajan Professor of Law by Panjab University, Chandigarh.

A seasoned academician, Prof Nishtha has also held a number of administrative positions, from being a member of Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Punjab Legal Service to Authority U.T. Chandigarh, Advisory Committee of Institute of correctional Administration, Chandigarh and State Level Authorization Committee of Punjab under the Transplantation of Human Organs Act- 1994 to Advisory Committee, Nari Niketan, Chandigarh.

Dr Nishtha Jaswal, in the year 1992, had also been awarded with British Academy Visiting Professorship.
