NEW DELHI: The Indira Gandhi National Open University's (IGNOU) School of Vocational Education and Training introduced a new certificate programme in fashion design aimed at enhancing employability in the apparel industry. The programme, designed for Class 12 (senior secondary) candidates, offers instruction in English and Hindi with a minimum duration of six months and a maximum of two years.
The certificate programme in fashion design by IGNOU focuses on developing fundamental knowledge and skills in pattern making and sewing techniques. It aims to equip students with a basic understanding of fashion design principles, knowledge of the global and Indian fashion industry, textile fundamentals, digital technology in Computer Aided Design (CAD), pattern making, sewing techniques, and entrepreneurial and communication skills.
IGNOU's fashion design programme caters to individuals aspiring to work as assistant designers in retail or export sectors, entrepreneurs in the fashion industry, or those seeking to upgrade their skills in pattern making and sewing.
This programme from IGNOU not only addresses the skill gap in the fashion industry but also contributes to India's economic growth targets. It provides a comprehensive curriculum tailored to industry needs, making it a valuable opportunity for aspiring fashion professionals.
As India targets 300 billion dollars in textile exports by 2024-25, along with creating 35 million new jobs in the sector, there's a growing need for skilled professionals. The programme coordinator, Ashok K Gaba, highlighted the importance of adopting innovative pedagogical approaches like blended learning to meet industry demands effectively.
With India's competitive advantage in the apparel sector, driven by abundant and cost-effective labour, the IGNOU's fashion design programme aligns with the country's goal to become a global apparel sourcing destination, the university said.
