NEW DELHI: The faculty of public administration, School of Social Sciences (SOSS), at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), has launched a new Post Graduate Diploma in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (PGDDRRM) programme.

The PGDDRRM programme covers various aspects of disaster risk reduction and management, including an internship component aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This initiative addresses the increasing threats from natural and human-induced hazards, aiming to make the nation safer and more resilient.

Candidates with a bachelor's degree are eligible to apply for the programme. Admissions are open twice a year, in July and January, through the official website of IGNOU, ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in. The PGDDRRM programme fee is Rs 7,400. The programme has a duration of one year, with a minimum of one year and a maximum of three years for completion.

The PGDDRRM programme targets a diverse group, including government and non-government organisations (NGO) functionaries, military, paramilitary, police, home guards, civil defence personnel, academicians, geologists, scientists, meteorologists, engineers, journalists, and officials from public sector undertakings and corporate sectors. It also caters to people’s representatives, rural development functionaries, primary health centre functionaries, relief workers, social workers, and environmentalists, as stated by IGNOU in the press release.

This programme prepares students for current and emerging job opportunities by equipping them with comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in disaster risk reduction and management. The flexible learning structure allows students to study at their own pace, accommodating their schedules and enhancing their overall learning experience, as the press release shows.
