IIT Guwahati is collaborating with the Assam government to open mining department, organise road safety conclave, advance tea technology

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati is collaborating with the Assam government to open a mining department in IIT Guwahati, organise an international road safety conclave, and advance tea technology.
According to a statement from IIT Guwahati, the mining department will train students through research and technical guidance to harness the resources of Assam and other northeast states of India. IIT Guwahati will be collaborating with the Assam transport ministry to organise an international road safety conclave to strengthen road safety in Assam. IIT Guwahati will also engage in research related to tea and its application in the medicine, health, and wellness sector.

The Assam government has also asked for collaboration from IIT Guwahati to establish the Assam Skill University. A meeting was held on February 22, which saw participation from Assam government officials and a team from the IIT Guwahati where discussion on these activities took place. In the meeting, a research and development facility under the engineering department was also proposed for the development of inland water transport in the region which will include designing marine engines, vessels, and repairing and servicing hub.

“As per the request of the state government, IIT Guwahati will be very glad to contribute mainly in the areas focusing in the exploration of mines and minerals, commerce and entrepreneurship development, involvement of drones in various sectors, transport sector - Inland water transport, water buses, road safety, aspects related to skill development in multiple upcoming sectors and establishing various centres of excellence and state of the art laboratories at the institute,” said TG Sitharam, director of IIT Guwahati.
