IIT Guwahati launches MTech flood and water resources management; no GATE required

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has launched a Master of Technology (MTech) course in flood and water resources management. The programme is designed for working professionals or for graduates with at least one year of experience in the water resources sector. Candidates are not required to appear for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) exam for admissions.

The programme is offered by the department of civil engineering at IIT Guwahati , and will be offered in hybrid mode - with classes being online, and labs and exams conducted on campus.

In order to apply for the MTech flood management programme, candidates should have a four-year undergraduate degree in civil or agricultural engineering with a minimum of 60% marks (or 6 CPI). Candidates will be selected on the basis of a written test and interview conducted by the department.

Applications for the new MTech programme at IIT Guwahati will remain open till July 31, 2025. The classes are scheduled to begin from August 18.

What IIT Guwahati MTech offers?

The IIT Guwahati MTech Flood and Water Resources Management will use tools such as hydrological modeling, geographic information system (GIS), remote sensing, and flood forecasting. This course will allow students to find careers in government agencies, international organisations, consultancy firms, and research institutions, as per an official statement.

The new MTech programme at IIT-G follows the multiple entry-exit pattern with recognised certificate options. Students who exit the course at any stage will be allowed to rejoin and continue their studies after a one-year gap.

• After completion of four courses - PG certificate in ‘Basics in Flood and Water Resources Management’
• After completion of seven courses - PG diploma in flood and water resources management
• After completion of two semesters and 10 courses - Master of Science (MSc) Engineering in flood and water resources management
• After completion of four semesters, all courses, and capstone projects - MTech Flood and Water Resources Management

The course is launched for an initiative under an agreement between the institute and the Water Resources Department of Assam. The initiative, led by Assam Flood and River Erosion Management Agency (FREMAA), and backed by World Bank , aims to nominate 20 engineers for the programme every year, to build a “flood-resilient” Assam.
