NEW DELHI: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur have found an efficient way to detect cataracts with an automated artificial intelligence algorithm by using eye images taken with low-cost near-infrared (NIR) cameras. IIT Jodhpur claims that the method is inexpensive and accurate.
Cataracts are usually detected by using fundus images where experts are required to handle the fundus cameras. The algorithm developed by the research team at IIT Jodhpur detects non-ideal eye boundaries efficiently and in a cost-effective manner as the method uses low-cost NIR cameras instead of ophthalmoscopes which are costly. The method developed by IIT Jodhpur researchers can be used in rural areas, says a statement from the institute.
The research team included Mayank Vatsa and Richa Singh, professors at the computer science and engineering department of IIT Jodhpur from the Image Analysis and Biometrics (IAB) Lab and PhD scholars and UG students Mahapara Khurshid, Yasmeena Akhter, Rohit Keshari, Pavani Tripathi, and Aditya Lakra.

“Currently, a large number of patients with cataracts have to visit secondary and tertiary care centres. The availability of such a solution can assist doctors at the primary health care centres in helping such patients," said Singh.
“We are extending this research to include both cataract and diabetic retinopathy in the solution and have collaborated with multiple hospitals in the country for domain expertise, data collection, and validation of the solution,” Vatsa.
