IIT Kanpur claims that the composting machine's cost-effective design makes it 20-30% cheaper than the rest.
NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur-incubated Agnys Waste Management pvt. ltd by the Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) at IIT Kanpur has developed an automatic composting machine called Bio-composting of Horticulture and Organic waste into Manure Indigenously (BHOOMI) that convert waste into manure in just 10-20 days, by collaborating with Imagineering Lab at IIT Kanpur, and with support from Engineer’s India Limited.
The composting machine has features such as carbon filters, shredders, air pumps, solar panels, which systematically convert waste into manure in just 10- 20 days. “The process is more convenient and rapid than the conventional technologies,” said a statement from IIT Kanpur.

According to IIT Kanpur, the carbon filters in the device solve the issue of smell, and the solar panels make the composter better at energy efficiency. The institute also claims that the device has a cost-effective design, which makes it 20-30 percent cheaper than the rest.
“Proper waste management has always been a very pertinent and crucial issue, especially in urban areas. It has direct implications for the ever-growing concern for Climate Change. At IIT Kanpur, we resolve to work for sustainability and other key areas of environmental conservation. This is a prime step in this regard and I congratulate the whole team for developing BHOOMI. I believe this device would be a boon for treating organic waste and would contribute significantly towards the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives,” said Abhay Karandikar, director of IIT Kanpur.
