IIT Kanpur revokes GST on JEE Advanced 2018 application fee

IIT Kanpur has revoked the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the application fee of JEE Advanced 2018. Candidates, who aspire to apply for JEE Advanced must note that now they do not need to pay the GST on JEE Advanced application fee. The official announcement made by IIT Kanpur reads, “In view of the decisions taken during the 25th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council held on January 18, 2018, the GST on registration fees for JEE (Advanced) 2018, as earlier notified, is withdrawn.”

As per the latest official notification, now female candidates (Indian nationals/POI/OCI) and SC/ST/PwD candidates have to pay Rs. 1300 as application fee, whereas all other Indian candidates (including POI/OCI) will have to pay Rs. 2600 as application fee. This fee is applicable only in case of exam centres in India. The registration fee for candidates applying for exam centres outside India is different. All Indian and foreign nationals (from SAARC nations), who wish to take the test in examination centres outside India, have to pay USD 160. Foreign nationals (from Non-SAARC nations) will have to pay USD 300 as application fee for JEE Advanced.

Though the registration fee was announced in the JEE Advanced brochure that was released on January 26, 2018, there was no clear mention about the GST, service charges, possessing fee or any other charges.

JEE Advanced application will be available in online mode from May 2 to 7. Only those candidates who qualify JEE Main (by being in the top 2,24,000 candidates) will be eligible to register for taking JEE Advanced for admission to the IITs.

For academic year 2018-19, in addition to the earlier capping of top 2,20,000 of JEE Main, another 4000 can register for JEE Advanced. In other words, top 2,24,000 candidates of JEE Main will be filtered for appearing in JEE Advanced exam. In 2016, this capping was limited to 2,00,000, while in 2015, only top 1,50,000 candidates of JEE Main were considered qualified for appearing in JEE Advanced.
