The IIT Madras’ Centre for Responsible AI and Ericsson will work on future networks, in line with the union government’s Bharat 6G program.

NEW DELHI: The Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI) of Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) today entered into IIT Madras, Ericsson agree for five-year joint research in responsible AIa partnership with Swedish technology firm Ericsson for joint research in artificial intelligence (AI).
Ericsson signed an agreement to partner with CeRAI as a ‘platinum consortium member’ for five years. IIT Madras said the CeRAI is an interdisciplinary research centre that aims to become a premier research centre for fundamental and applied research in responsible AI. Research in the field is of high importance to Ericsson as the 6G networks in communication will be autonomously driven by AI algorithms, it added.
Manu Santhanam, dean of the Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research, IIT Madras, said, “Research on AI will produce the tools for operating tomorrow’s businesses. IIT Madras strongly believes in impactful translational work in collaboration with the industry, and we are very happy to collaborate with Ericsson to do cutting edge research and development in the field.”
Magnus Frodigh, global head of Ericsson Research, said, “6G and future networks aim to seamlessly blend the physical and digital worlds, enabling immersive AR/VR experiences. While AI-controlled sensors connect humans and machines, responsible AI practices are essential to ensure trust, fairness, and privacy compliance. Our partnership with CERAI at IIT Madras is aligned with the Indian Government’s vision for the Bharat 6G program.”

Following the agreement signing ceremony, a symposium on ‘responsible AI for networks of the future’ was organised. The panellists of the symposium included R David Koilpillai, Qualcomm Institute chair professor, IIT Madras; Harish Guruprasad, core member, CeRAI; Arun Rajkumar, core member, CeRAI; Jorgen Gustafsson, head of AI at Ericsson Research; Catrin Granbom, head of cloud systems and platforms, Ericsson Research; Kaushik Dey, research leader in AI/ML, Ericsson Research – India.
