NEW DELHI: A donation of Rs 228 crore was made by IIT Madras alumnus, Krishna Chivukula, for education and scholarships for international students. It is one of the largest donations made to support international students and research.

The donation made by Krishna Chivukula will be used to support international students at IIT Madras through various scholarships, grant programmes, sports scholarships among others.

Krishna Chivukula graduated from IIT Madras in 1970. The institute honoured Chivukula by offering an academic block – ‘Krishna Chivukula Block’ - during an event at the campus today on August 6.

Mahesh Panchagnula, dean of IIT Madras, said: “Krishna Chivukula is not just a successful techno-business person but also of an ideal alumnus. His humility and generosity will stand as exemplary characteristics for generations of alumni.”

The event was attended by other notable members of IIT Madras such as professor V Kamakoti, professor Mahesh Panchagnula including other fellow researchers and faculty members.

The IIT Madras director, V Kamakoti, said: “That our alumnus still remembers his Alma Mater after several decades reinforces the fact that education is the only immortal wealth that we can give to mankind.”

He added: “Grateful to Shri Krishna Chivukula for his big contribution, which will benefit several future generations of students in their pursuit of knowledge.”

Fundraising by IIT Madras

IIT Madras raised an amount of Rs 513 crore during 2023-204 financial year with a 135% increase from the previous year.

In recent years, IIT Madras emerged as the national leader in ‘Tech Driven CSR’ through which the institute translates its cutting-edge research that benefits the country at large.
