IIT Madras Global, Johor Corporation plan applied AI hub in Malaysia

IIT Madras Global Research Foundation (IITM Global) and Johor Corporation (JCorp), the investment arm of the Johor state government in Malaysia, are exploring plans to establish a Centre of Excellence for Applied Artificial Intelligence in Johor.

The two sides recently signed an agreement of understanding to study the feasibility of the centre, which aims to focus on industry-led AI innovation and responsible deployment of emerging technologies. The initiative aims to position Johor as a regional hub for applied AI while strengthening technology collaboration between India and Malaysia.

The proposed centre will work on translating advanced AI research into real-world industry applications. Areas of focus are likely to include responsible AI frameworks, talent development, applied research, executive education and startup engagement. The partners are also looking at creating industry testbeds and pilot projects in Johor to accelerate adoption of AI solutions across sectors.

The development follows recent discussions between India and Malaysia on expanding cooperation in digital technologies. The collaboration is also aligned with broader efforts under the Malaysia India Digital Council to deepen ties in areas such as digital public infrastructure, cybersecurity, digital talent and artificial intelligence.

IIT Madras Global AI hub

Officials from both sides described the move as a step toward building a stronger innovation bridge between Southeast Asia and India. Johor Corporation said the partnership supports its ambition to develop new growth sectors and build globally competitive technology ecosystems. IITM Global, meanwhile, sees Malaysia as a key partner in its international expansion roadmap.

Thirumalai Madhavnarayan, CEO, IITM Global, said, the agreement demonstrates the willingness of the organisation to enhance global innovation partnerships and Malaysia has become one of the strategic partners. He further said that the partnership with Johor Corporation is in line with the Malaysian digital transformation ambitions and that the idea is to commercialize superior AI research into practice, innovation-led economies in the region, talent growth and development, and innovation.

If realised, the centre is expected to contribute to research collaboration, talent development and innovation-led economic growth, while further strengthening India-Malaysia technology ties.
