IIT Mandi celebrates 17th Foundation Day, highlights ₹120 crore research work and announces ₹700 crore expansion to boost innovation and growth

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi marked its 17th Foundation Day on March 30, 2026, with participation from experts in academia, industry, and global research. The event focused on how areas like artificial intelligence, robotics, and new technologies are shaping India’s future.
Over the years, IIT Mandi has built a strong base in research and innovation. The institute is working in fields such as AI, robotics, quantum technology, and interdisciplinary engineering, while also encouraging students to explore new ideas and entrepreneurship.
The event was attended by key guests including Kris Gopalakrishnan and Oussama Khatib. Faculty members, students, and researchers also took part in the celebrations.

IIT Mandi director Laxmidhar Behera said the foundation day is a time to look back at the institute’s journey and progress. “We have focused on research, innovation, and preparing students for future challenges,” he said.
He added that the institute has worked on research projects worth over Rs 120 crore in the last three years. “Our aim is to support innovation and build leaders who can contribute to the country’s growth,” he said.
Kris Gopalakrishnan said the coming years will be important for India in terms of technology and innovation. “Institutions like IIT Mandi have a key role in developing talent and supporting new ideas,” he said.

Oussama Khatib also spoke about the institute’s potential. “IIT Mandi has a strong environment for learning and research. It can grow into a major centre for innovation, especially in robotics,” he said.
The institute also recognised students, faculty, and staff for their work in academics, research, and sports during the event. These awards highlighted achievements across different areas.
IIT Mandi shared its plan to invest around Rs 700 crore in expanding infrastructure. This is expected to improve facilities, support research, and help the institute grow further in the coming years.
