IIT Roorkee, Japanese institutions team up for economic, environment research

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has established a new department of design which will be functional from the 2021-22 academic year. The department will also offer two postgraduate programmes, in “industrial design” and “innovation management”, said a statement from IIT Roorkee.
Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, director of IIT Roorkee, said that both the programmes were “warmly received by students from across the country.”
The masters in design course structure is industry-oriented and will include the fundamentals of design and prototyping, design thinking, product-human interface, materials and manufacturing, design methods, visual design, form studies, computer-aided-design, and design for sustainability.
Students under the MIM programme will study products innovation, services innovation, market and marketing innovation, organizational innovation, process innovation and management and leadership innovation.
“The department plans to act as a bridge between academia and industry to address societal issues through co-creation efforts and transformation,” said the statement.
Dean of academic affairs, Apurbba Kumar Sharma, hopes that the new department will “shape and pass on to future leaders a novel world view with qualities like inclusiveness, sustainability, critical thinking, foresight, environmental and social concerns, willingness to solve problems, and adaptability”, he said.
According to the head of the design department, Inderdeep Singh, students graduating will be “outstanding manufacturers, developers, service providers and entrepreneurs”.
