Under the new IIT Ropar BTech curriculum framework, integrated dual degree for the BTech-MTech courses, minor degrees, and a smooth branch change process have been introduced for students

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar has revamped its undergraduate engineering curriculum from the academic session 2026-27 onwards, replacing a rigid course structure and offering a flexible and student-driven framework. IIT Ropar's curriculum revision aims to prepare not only engineers for jobs but also for research, entrepreneurship, and leadership in a rapidly growing world.
According to the official IIT Ropar press release, students will be able to complete most of their core courses by the end of the fifth semester, and the remaining three semesters will be free for advanced electives, internships, research projects, startup work, and interdisciplinary exploration.
Notably, students can draw on up to 30 credits of open electives, allowing them to study subjects well outside their parent discipline. The four-year course carries a total of 160 credits. The revised engineering curriculum is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) and the National Credit Framework.
In another major update, IIT Ropar has added an interdisciplinary integrated dual-degree programme for students who maintain a CGPA of 7.0 or above and can opt for this pathway after the 6th semester.
Students can earn both a BTech in their home discipline and an MTech in an interdisciplinary field by completing an additional year of study and fulfilling 40 extra academic credits. The various disciplines on offer include data science, robotics and autonomous systems, cyber security, energy systems, and quantum science and technology, among others.
IIT Ropar’s new curriculum framework also offers minor degrees and specialisations, allowing students to build expertise in emerging domains without losing focus in their core discipline. The institute has also renewed its branch change policy for students who switch disciplines.
“Courses completed in the original branch that no longer form part of the new programme will be credited toward open elective requirements, ensuring no academic work is lost in transition,” the official IIT Ropar press release said.

Alongside technical training, the BTech new curriculum integrates humanities and social sciences, Indian Knowledge Systems, ethics, communication skills and life skills as part of the core academic experience for students. Additionally, co-curricular engagement through NSS/NSO, music and art is also included in the framework, reflecting IIT Ropar’s view.
IIT Ropar’s director Rajeev Ahuja, on the curriculum launch said: Engineering education cannot afford to stay static. We want our graduates to be technically sound, intellectually curious and confident enough to solve problems that do not have textbook answers. This curriculum gives them the space and the tools to do exactly that.”
