Indian medical students in China who fail to get practising license ineligible for FMGE: Embassy of India

NEW DELHI: The Embassy of India in China stated that any Indian medical student who joins a clinical medicine programme in China after November 2021 and fails to obtain a license to practice as a medical doctor in China, will be rendered ineligible to appear for Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). The Indian Embassy was replying to queries by prospective Indian students as well as their parents regarding eligibility for Indian students to appear in the qualifying exam conducted by National Medical Commission (NMC).

The Indian Embassy asked students and parents to view the NMC notice dated November 18, 2021 wherein it has stated in Clause 4(b) that foreign medical students must be “registered with the respective professional regulatory body or otherwise, competent to grant license to practice medicine in their respective jurisdiction of the country in which the medical degree is awarded and at par with the license to practice medicine given to citizen of that country”.

“The Embassy has apprised the Chinese authorities concerned and medical colleges with a request that they should ensure that all Indian students coming to China for clinical medicine program are educated, trained and facilitated so that they can fulfill the above requirements of NMC,” it said.

The Embassy further said that students also asked whether they can work in Chinese hospitals as “assistant doctor” after completing their education but fail to obtain a medical practitioner license in China so as to earn a living and pay back education loans. The Embassy informed that it has formally approached the concerned Chinese authorities regarding this and sought confirmation on the existence of this option. It will share the information, if any, on its social media handles.

“All prospective Indian students are once again advised to refer to our advisories on students issue as well as relevant regulations of NMC before exploring options to study clinical medicine program in China. Prospective students/parents are advised to directly re-confirm all terms of reference of admission directly from the relevant University(ies) in China, before accepting such admission,” the Embassy lastly said.
