Indian Science Congress: PM calls upon scientists to take work from ‘lab to land’

NEW DELHI, MARCH 16: Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has called upon the scientific community to increase interaction with school children and extend their research work from ‘lab to land’.

Prime Minister during his inaugural address at the 105th Indian Science Congress at Manipur University said, “Our scientific achievements need to be communicated to society. This will help inculcate scientific temper among youth. We have to throw open our institutions & laboratories to our children. I call upon scientists to develop a mechanism for interaction with school-children.”

He also said that it is time to redefine the term ‘R&D’ as ‘Research’ for the ‘Development’ of the nation. “Science is after all, but a means to a far greater end; of making a difference in the lives of others, of furthering human progress and welfare,” PM said.

The Prime Minister said that India has a rich tradition and a long history of both discovery and use of science and technology. It is time to reclaim our rightful place among the front-line nations in this field. I call upon the scientific community to extend its research from the labs to the land

“I am confident that through the dedicated efforts of our scientists, we are embarking on the road to a glorious future. The future we wish for ourselves and for our children,” he said.

Three- four Nobel Laureates (Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Peace, Economics, Field prize in mathematics) are attending the conference and will interact with the other attendees.

The 105th edition of Indian Science Congress was shifted to Manipur University after it was canceled at the Osmania University. This Congress will focus on translational science for promoting affordable sustainable innovation. During the five days, thrust will be given on various science disciplines, which has reached to the society. In a way, discussions will be on science for all, Science and Technology Fostering Inclusive Societal Development and Science & Society: Bridging the Gap through Innovations. A technology-based start-up conclave will also be showcased inviting the top class innovators and entrepreneurial researchers.

Speaking about recently launched Prime Minister’s Research Fellows Scheme he said, “We have approved a 'Prime Minister’s Research Fellows' scheme. Under this, bright minds from the best Institutions in the country, like IISc, IIT, NIT, IISER & IIIT will be offered direct admission in Ph.D. in IIT & IISc. This will help address brain-drain from our country.”
