NEW DELHI: International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8 to celebrate and commemorate the social, economical, cultural and political achievements of women all around the world. On March 19, 1911, the first International Women's Day was marked by over a million people in countries like Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.

History, Theme

The United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day in 1975. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as an official UN holiday for women's rights and world peace. It has since been commemorated annually by the UN and much of the world, with each year's observance centered on a particular theme or issue within women's rights.

The theme for this year’s observance is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.

International Women's Day Wishes

UN Women tweeted: “Happy International Women's Day! Today is the day to commit to standing up for the human rights of women everywhere. Let's unite for an equal and sustainable future!

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “On Women’s Day, I salute our Nari Shakti and their accomplishments in diverse fields. The Government of India will keep focusing on women empowerment through its various schemes with an emphasis on dignity as well as opportunity.”

President Ram Nath Kovind wished on Twitter and said, “Greetings on the International Women’s Day! Women are making exemplary contributions in all walks of life. Let us recommit ourselves to ensure their safety and dignity and to provide opportunities to each of them to pursue their dreams and aspirations.”

Celebrations

Schools, colleges and universities across the globe also participate in the International Women’s Day celebrations every year by organizing quiz, speeches, seminars etc. University of Allahabad tweeted: “An exhibition of different startups by alumnus of Centre of Fashion Designing and Technology,IPS, University of Allahabad on 8 March 2022 At Center of Fashion Technology.”

University of Delhi is organising a seminar on the occasion.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is organising a lecture.
