Jamia Millia and Zakhir Hussain

Hussain joined JMI in 1926. His contribution to the university’s establishment and expansion was rooted in the creation of “Life members of Jamia”. These included individuals who pledged to serve JMI for 20 years. The motto of JMI was also coined by by Hussain as he explained the vision behind the design of the motto. Interestingly, “Jamia” is an Urdu word for “university” while Millia connotes national, says JMI’s official website.

The university was established as part of protest against the British colonial regime. It was based on the ideals of anti-colonial Islamic activism and pro-Independence inclinations of the Indian Muslim intelligentsia who had completed their studies under western education system.
