JMI won the award for teaching, training on disaster management and conducting research for the better management and mitigation of global natural disasters.

NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has been awarded the Disaster Risk Reduction Excellence Award (DRR Excellence Award) by the World Congress on Disaster Management (WCDM) for contributing to disaster management through research, and teaching and training. The award was given at the WCDM-DRR awards ceremony 2022 held at India International Centre (IIC) on June 22, 2022.
The award was received by the JMI vice-chancellor Najma Akhtar and registrar Nazim Husain Jafri. The chief guest of the WCDM-DRR awards ceremony was the Union minister of tourism, culture and development of the northeastern region, G Krishna Reddy. Many dignitaries, scientists, researchers, policymakers, practitioners and responders were present during the award ceremony.

WCDM is a research organisation under the Disaster Management Initiatives and Convergence Society (DMICS), a civil society initiative established in 2005. The objective of WCDM is to bring together researchers, policymakers and practitioners from around the world to discuss issues regarding disaster risk management and find solutions. JMI was awarded the DRR Excellence Award for its efforts such as providing training in disaster management and conducting research for the better management and mitigation of global natural disasters.
