Japanese student dies at IIT Guwahati, suicide suspected

NEW DELHI: A student of Gifu University, Japan, interning at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, was found dead on campus on Thursday.

The student, Kota Onoda, was in the department of biosciences and bioengineering. A student on campus, requesting not to be named, said it is a suspected case of suicide.

However, the IIT Guwahati administration is yet to confirm this.

This is the second suicide on the IIT Guwahati campus this year In January. Pannem Pavan Siddartha, a final-year student of electronics and communications had killed himself in his hostel room. He was from Andhra Pradesh.

The past two months have seen a spate of deaths on IIT campuses across the country. In late October, a third-year student of computer science, Pichikala Siddharth died by suicide in IIT Hyderabad. That was the third suicide on that campus this year. In November, a first-year student of humanities and development studies, Fathima Latheef killed herself in IIT Madras and another student in IIT Delhi, Ananya Gupta, fell from her hostel balcony.
