Kashmir students’ group demands JNU, DU, JMI, AMU exam centres in Srinagar

NEW DELHI: Students in Kashmir have written to the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha requesting him to escalate their demand for setting up entrance exam centres for Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi University (DU), Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI) and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Srinagar considering the COVID-19 panemic.

In the letter to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the J&K Students Association, a group representing students from Jammu and Kashmir studying within and without the Union Territory, said that “hundreds of students” are appearing for these examinations and travelling to centres in Delhi would “prove fatal” for these students considering the pandemic situation.

The association asked the lieutenant governor to “take initiative” and discuss the matter with the university officials who “have not announced an exam centre at Srinagar for the Kashmiri students yet”.

The association said that students cannot afford air tickets to travel as most of them hail from marginalised communities.

“Hundrends of students from Kashmir Valley are appearing in Entrance Examination for 2021-2022 in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi University (DU), Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI) and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The problem is that students from Kashmir have their centres in Delhi and Aligarh. The present circumstances of Covid-19 could prove fatal for the aspirants,” said Nasir Khuehami, national spokesperson of J&K Students Association.

As students fear contacting the coronavirus during the commute, parents are largely unwilling to send their children to other states during the pandemic, the association said.

It said that most students are not vaccinated which increases the risk of contagion especially when experts are warning against a third wave of the pandemic.
