NEW DELHI, JULY 2: The first of four new National Law Universities (NLUs) promised in different states, has been opened in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh. With the new NLU - Dharmashastra National Law University (MPDNLU), Jabalpur, the total number of functional NLUs goes up to 22.
Also, Madhya Pradesh is now the second state to have more than one NLU now. Till last year, Maharashtra was the only state to have multiple NLUs – a total of three.
Established under the MP State Act Ordinance 2018, the MPDNLU will commence its academic year from 2018.
Prof Balraj Chouhan has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the 22nd National Law University of India. Prof Chouhan had earlier served as Vice Chancellor of RMLNLU Lucknow and NLIU Bhopal prior to his erstwhile position as Director of School of Law in Amity University, Lucknow Campus.
The MPDNLU will be admitting students through a fresh application process which will also filter candidates basis their CLAT scores. According to the officials, the university will be announcing its application process soon for the admissions into its BA LLB programme which will have a total capacity of 120 students.
The newly established NLU, for now, will operate from the campus of Bharat Ratna Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute of Telecom Training at Jabalpur.
The admission will be granted on the basis of CLAT 2018 scores, the officials added.

The BA LLB application process for the academic year 2018 will begin in the first or second week of July.
The candidates will need to pay a fee of Rs. 1000 (Rs. 500 for SC/ST category candidates) before submitting the application for BA LLB programme of Madhya Pradesh Dharmashastra National Law University.
MPDNLU Admission Process
After receiving the BA LLB application from various Common Law Admission Test takers, The MPDNLU will prepare a merit list on the basis of their CLAT 2018 scores.
The merit list will then be considered for admissions into the 120 BA LLB seats.
