Manipur Protest: State orders govt, private colleges to remain shut on September 11, 12

NEW DELHI: The Department of Higher and Technical Education, Manipur has declared holiday in all government and private colleges of the state on September 11 and 12, 2024. The decision comes after over 40 students were injured during confrontations with security forces as they attempted to march toward the Raj Bhavan in Imphal, on Tuesday.
The state government has also imposed a ban on internet services in the state starting on Tuesday. "In continuation of this Government Order of even no. dated 8th September, 2024, it is hereby ordered that all the Government Colleges/Aided Colleges/Private Colleges under the Higher & Technical Education Department, Government of Manipur shall continue to remain closed on 11.09.2024 (Wednesday) & 12.09.2024 (Thursday)", the official order stated.
The government has temporarily banned mobile internet services in five valley districts. Previously, the state government had issued a notice suspending internet services across the entire state for five days.
However, the amended order now restricts the suspension to only the five valley districts due to intense student protests. Officials clarified that the hill districts are not affected by this order.
Students stage protests over drone and missile attacks
Thousands of students staged protests in front of the Manipur secretariat and Raj Bhavan, demanding action against those responsible for recent drone and missile attacks, and urging the protection of the state's "territorial and administrative integrity." The latest violence, including drone and missile strikes, has left at least eight people dead and over 12 injured. School and college students voiced their anger at the authorities by chanting slogans like "Long Live Manipur," "Resign all incompetent MLAs," and "Give Unified Command to State Government."
Later, the students met with Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Governor L Acharya. After the meeting, student representatives informed reporters that they had submitted six demands, including the dismissal of the Director General of Police (DGP) and the state government’s Security Advisor for their alleged failure to control the violence. They also called for the Unified Command, currently led by former CRPF DG Kuldiep Singh, to be placed under Singh's authority.
