NEET UG Counselling 2024: NMC okays 4 medical colleges in Telangana; UP gets 5

NEW DELHI: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved four new medical colleges in Telangana with 50 MBBS seats each and five in Uttar Pradesh with 100 seats each. With this, Telangana has achieved a total of eight medical colleges this year taking the total number of MBBS seats in Telangana government colleges to 4,090. The apex medical commission has also given nod to 50 more seats in two medical colleges each in UP.

Informing about the NMC approval, Telangana health minister Damodar Raja Narasimha said that the central health department has given nod to medical colleges in Yadadri, Medak, Maheswaram, and Kuthbullapur adding a total of 200 medical seats. Earlier, the medical commission gave a green signal to Mulugu, Narsampet, Gadwal and Narayanapet medical colleges, also with 50 MBBS seats.

New government medical colleges in Telangana

Explaining how the Telangana medical colleges obtained the permission, the state health minister said that the government applied for eight colleges this year. The NMC officials who came to inspect these colleges in June expressed their displeasure over lack of necessary facilities for establishment of medical colleges. The commission cannot give permission to run a medical college cannot without teaching staff and facilities.

As officials brought the issue to the attention of the government, the new government allocated the necessary funds. The NMC went for the first appeal after correcting the errors raised by it. After this appeal, NMC gave permission to the first four colleges but not to the remaining ones. Health minister said that he regularly monitored the permissions of these colleges and appointed staff to the newly approved colleges. In the recent general transfers, staff were transferred to the rest of the colleges only after filling up the vacancies in those four colleges. To overcome the shortage of professors, promotions were given to those who were eligible. Funds have been allocated for the purchase of laboratory and diagnostic equipment for the college and hospital as well.

A second appeal was made to the union government after fulfilling all the shortcomings raised by the NMC. On the orders of CM Revanth Reddy and health minister Damodara Raja Narsimha, health secretary Christina J Chongtoo, director of medical education, Vani, other officers and a team of doctors went to Delhi and met the officials of the union health department and the NMC. He explained that all the necessary facilities have been provided for the establishment of colleges and the government is ready to provide them if there is anything else required.

“It is against this backdrop that the Central Health Department has decided to give permission to all the colleges. NMC has been directed to issue a letter of permission,” the minister added. Rajanarsimha thanked the central government for giving permission to the colleges and CM Revanth Reddy for allocating necessary funds on time.

UP medical colleges

In Uttar Pradesh, NMC has okayed five new medical colleges at Gonda, Kaushambi, Chandauli, Kheri, and Auraiya with 100 MBBS seats, deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak informed. With this, a total of 600 MBBS seats have been created, including addition of 50 seats each in recently approved medical colleges at Lalitpur and Kanpur Dehat districts.

In Gonda, the Autonomous State Medical College has received approval from the central government for 100 MBBS seats starting from the 2024-25 academic session.

With this, the total number of medical seats in UP has reached 11,200, including 5,150 in government colleges. Of 75 districts in the state, 66 now have a medical college, said the government.
