NEW DELHI: The human resource development minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank' virtually launched an online B.Sc. degree in programming and data science on Tuesday.

The online programme will be the world’s first such course and offered by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.

Anyone who has completed Class 12, with English and Maths at the Class 10 level, and is enrolled in any undergraduate course will be considered eligible. Graduates and working professionals can also take up this programme.

Students enrolled in different undergraduate courses will be able to pursue the degree program without changing their courses.

Pokhriayal, in the virtual launch of the programme, urged the IITs to innovate new alternatives for the 59 Chinese mobile apps that were banned on Monday. IIT directors responded enthusiastically.

Remote learning

The programme will be conducted on a dedicated online portal benefiting learners from remote parts of India. It will be offered in three different stages - the foundational programme, the diploma programme and degree programme. Students will have the option to exit from the program and receive a certificate, diploma or a degree, respectively.

Interested students will be required to pay Rs. 3,000 for the entrance exam. Qualified students will go through a four-week academic plan which includes online course lectures, submission of online assignments and a qualifying exam. The reading material will also be provided in online mode.

At the launch, Pokhriyal appreciated the unique online course as it removed all barriers of age, discipline or geographic location and provides access to a world-class curriculum in data science which is in huge demand for skilled professionals.

He further said that the program will give an edge to the students in terms of landing lucrative job opportunities while learning from a recognized institution such as IIT Madras.

IIT Madras has also bagged the first position in this year’s National Institutional Research Framework.
