The NALSAR University law students cited CJI Suryan Kant’s conduct and remarks during the proceedings related to the NEET protests at Jantar Mantar as the reason for their opposition, as per the report.

Students of NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, have expressed their disapproval of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant being invited as the chief guest at the upcoming convocation, The Hindu reported.
The law students cited CJI Kant’s conduct and remarks during the proceedings related to the NEET protests at Jantar Mantar as the reason for their opposition, the report said.
On July 23, 2026, the outgoing law batch wrote to the NALSAR University admin, urging them to reconsider the tradition of inviting the CJI to the convocation, the report read.
Notably, the university has not taken any official decision or said anything on the matter yet, it added.
According to the report, by July 25, around 380 students from various law batches joined the outgoing students' protest against inviting the CJI as the chief guest at the convocation.
“The NALSAR's solidarity with NEET protesters and activist Sonam Wangchuk was first visible on the campus on July 20. The solidarity took shape as a collective protest when the CJI-led Bench declined to initiate suo motu proceed-ings against the alleged police excesses during the Cockroach Janta Party's march to Parliament,” the report read.
According to a report by the New Minute, the law students’, in the letter to the university, said: “As law students, our concern is specific to our graduating batch. A convocation should reflect the university’s commitment to constitutional rights, access to justice, and reasoned engagement with grievances. Receiving our degrees from a dignitary whose recent public conduct, as reported, appears dismissive of serious allegations of police brutality against protesting citizens sits uneasily with the values we have been taught at NALSAR.”
The Hindu report further added that the university officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that it is unlikely that the convocation will be held this month as the later weeks would coincide with mid-semester examinations for some classes.
