NEW DELHI: Foreign medical graduates will be able to complete their incomplete internships in India as the National Medical Commission (NMC), in a circular has allowed doing so considering the agony and stress faced by students due to the COVID-19 pandemic and war situations. Many medical graduates have faced difficulties in completing their internship programmes due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

According to a circular released by NMC on Friday, if the candidates have cleared the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), their application for completing the internship can be processed by the state medical councils.

“Considering the agony and stress faced by these foreign medical students, their application to complete the remaining part of the internship in India is considered eligible. Accordingly, the same may be processed by the state medical councils provided that the candidates must have cleared FMGE before applying for completion of internship in India,” said the circular from NMC.

The NMC has put forwards certain conditions such as whether the medical degree is registerable to practice medicine in their respective jurisdiction, documents of successful completion of physical training equivalent to MBBS, copy of passport, VISA and immigration details, and clearing FMGE. If these requirements are met, the state medical councils can offer internships for up to 12 months period.
