NEW DELHI, MAY 4: As many as 4360 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) students have qualified the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2018, which is a jump of 797 students as compared to last year. This year number of students appearing for the JEE Main also increased by 1896 as a total of 11,653 Navodaya students appeared, of which 4360 have qualified for the Advance Examination, accounting for 37 percent success rate.

As per the government, out of 4360 students who qualified for Advanced examination, as many as 444 students were trained with special coaching with the help of NVS alumni network and NGOs.

Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar took a social media platform to appreciate the efforts put by the students and the school administrators. “This year 4360 Rural Students of Navodaya Vidyalaya have qualified for JEE Advanced as against 3563 students last year, which is an impressive 22% increase. Kudos to them. This is also a testimony of govt's focus on quality education,” he tweeted on May 3.

The set of Schools run by the central government in rural areas has shown tremendous results as their students have been qualifying various national and state level examinations in large numbers. In the year 2017, as many as 9757 JNV Students appeared for the JEE Main and a total of 3563 qualified for JEE Advance examination. In 2016, of the 9,567 students appeared for the JEE from these schools; 3567 qualified JEE Main and 481 of them were admitted to IITs.

Navodaya Vidyalayas were started in 1986 to provide modern quality education to the talented children predominantly from rural areas. The schools have produced, for many years, excellent results.

There are 625 JNVs functioning across the country except Tamil Nadu. Entire cost of education and the living is borne by the government. The uniqueness of Navodayas lies in the selection of talented rural children and providing them a platform through free quality education that is similar to the best in a residential school system.

Joint Entrance Examination is conducted for admission to premier institutes like IIT/NITs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
