The National Council for Teacher Education has allowed 35 more colleges to launch the four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP). This brings the total number of colleges offering ITEP to 77 and the total number of seats to 7,100. Of the newly-approved, 18 colleges are in Assam.
Ranoj Pegu, education and tribal affairs minister of Assam, wrote on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter): “Assam is leading the nation in implementing #NEP2020. As per the list released by NCTE, 18 institutes from Assam have been approved to offer the 4-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP), with a total allocation of 1,500 seats. This accounts for 21% of the 7,100 seats sanctioned across 77 institutions in the country.”
The four-year ITEP, leading to degrees such as BA.BEd, BSC.BEd and BCom.BEd, was a key proposal of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The NCTE recently framed guidelines for 15,000 standalone B.ED colleges to transform into multidisciplinary institutions and launch the ITEP.
The ITEP course includes a major in a specific discipline with teacher training.
