NEW DELHI: Amid protests by NEET PG aspirants in Jammu and Kashmir against the pooling of MBBS and postgraduate seats in All India Quota (AIQ), Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said he would request the Centre to defer the pooling of MBBS seats of the UT in AIQ from the current session.

Following days of protest by the MBBS students, Manoj Sinha met the NEET postgraduate MD/MS aspirants and discussed their concerns about UT's participation in the All India quota in the current year.

He said, “Students sought more time for preparation. Considering their petition, I'll request the central government to defer it for the current year”.

He further said that “It will allow the aspirant more time for preparation. They will be in an advantageous position and eligible for 5,000 seats in MD/MS under all India quota from existing UT seats of 543.”

The undergraduate medical students will have access to a larger pool of 4,568 seats instead of the existing 1,000 seats, he added.

#saynotoAIQ: NEET PG aspirants protest in J-K

Medical aspirants, however, expressed their disappointment and continued their protest against the government’s move using hashtags like #saynotoAIQ, #NO_TO_AIQ_IN_NEETPG_FOR_JK. Earlier, J-K used to reserve all medical seats for local students, opting out of the AIQ.

A Twitter user said, “Massive grand protest at Pratap Park Srinagar by medicos of SKIMS, GMC Srinagar, GMC Baramulla and GMC Anantnag against All India Reservation Quota in PG seats.”

Another user said, “GMC Bla. staged a protest against pooling of J-K PG seats under AIQ ..With round the year blockades, frequent curfews and internet blackouts, how can u even expect this would be a fair merit now by comparing a non-Kashmiri with Kashmiri.”

According to reports, the Medical Council Committee (MCC), in its latest notification, has stated that the J-K government was likely to participate in the AIQ counselling from this year and referred the subject to the J-K administration for its approval.
