NID opens applications for PhD in design admissions 2027; apply by October 1

The National Institute of Design (NID) has started the application process for admission to NID’s Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in design for the academic session 2027. Candidates can apply for the NID PhD in design programme through the official website at admissions.nid.edu.

The NID PhD application window will be closed on October 1 and the Doctoral Research Test (DRT) will be held on October 22.

Registered candidates will be able to edit their applications from October 2 to 4 where they could modify the details filled in the application forms except the programme applying for, candidates name, date of birth, registered mobile number and email ID.

NID PhD Design Admissions 2027: Eligibility, modes

As per the eligibility criteria for full-time, candidates must have a master’s degree in design from an accredited institution or recognised university or PG diploma programme in design from the National Institute of Design or advanced entry programme or five and a half year School Leavers’ professional education programme diploma in design from the National Institute of Design.

Notably, the PhD programme is allowed to be taken up in part-time or full-time formats.

For a full time course, candidates should have to be present on campus throughout the duration of their doctoral study period.

The maximum duration allowed for a full-time candidate is three years, which can be extended up to 5 years upon formal application by the candidate and endorsement by their guide and co-guide, the official brochure read.

Moreover, the candidates seeking part-time admission should have to present on the campus for the duration of scheduled coursework, seminars, and other academic requirements that are declared to be held in person.

The maximum duration allowed for a part-time candidate is 5 years, which can be extended up to 7 years upon formal application by the candidate and endorsement by their guide and co-guide.

PhD Design Admissions 2027: Selection process

Candidates will be selected for the PhD in Design programme through multiple stages, including submission and screening of the application form, evaluation of the research proposal, DRT, and interview.

The DRT round is designed to test the candidate’s design aptitude and research abilities, general awareness, basic numeric and design abilities, among other factors.

Those having work experience of more than 15 years are exempt from taking the DRT. Candidates who pass the DRT would proceed to the next and final stage of selection, the Interview.
