NEW DELHI, APRIL 3: The Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD) has released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings 2018 with a separate ranking for law colleges. The NIRF ranking of law colleges is dominated by NLUs where National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bangalore tops the chart with a score of 75.79. The National Law University Delhi, with a score of 74.58, bags the second spot, closely followed by NALSAR Hyderabad (70.95).

RGSOIPL (IIT Kharagpur) and NLU Jodhpur are ranked at fourth and fifth positions with 67.07 and 63.50 scores, respectively.

The top 10 NIRF ranked Law School for 2018 also includes two private law schools - Symbiosis Law School (Rank 9) and Dr B R Ambedkar College of Law (Rank 10).

Low Participation and fewer ranked

While there are almost 1300 law schools recognised by the Bar Council of India (BCI), astonishingly, only 101 law schools participated in the NIRF Ranking 2018. Further, only 10 of them received the NIRF Ranking. However, in comparison to other domains, the numbers of institutions in the category of law colleges is very low. The NIRF India Rankings 2018 comprises ranking for 100 universities, 100 engineering colleges, 50 management institutions, 50 pharmacy colleges, and 25 medicine colleges among other categories.

NLUs missing in NIRF rankings

Though there are 22 National Law Universities (NLUs), which are considered to be the elite group of institutions in law education, only 11 of them participated in the ranking process conducted under NIRF which is guided by MHRD. Further, of the participating NLUs, only six found place in the final ranking released by the Union HRD Minister.

Private College get 'under 10' spots

While the top 10 list is dominated by National Law Universities two private law schools - Symbiosis Law School and Dr B R Ambedkar College of Law secured ninth and tenth rank respectively.
