Patna school timings change amid heatwave; classes end at 12:30 pm

Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand have revised school timings to keep students safe from extreme heat.

The heatwave conditions in Bihar are impacting the daily routine of school students. Patna district administration has issued an order to change school timings for young children. As per the official notice issued by District Magistrate Dr Thyagarajan SM, all government and private schools in Patna will now conduct classes for pre-primary to Class 5 students only till 12:30 pm. Post this, academic activities for these classes will not be conducted due to the severe heat conditions. The directive will remain in effect from April 21, 2026 to April 25, 2026. Authorities have also indicated that the duration of the order may be extended if the heatwave conditions worsen further in the coming days.

The order has been issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, keeping in view the health and safety of students amid the ongoing heatwave. The administration in the notice mentioned that this decision is to protect children from extreme weather conditions. However, no changes have been made for students of Class 6 and above. Therefore, their school timings will continue as per the regular schedule. The district administration has urged all schools to strictly follow the guidelines to ensure the safety of students during the extreme weather situation.

Lucknow School Timings Changed

In view of the rising heatwave conditions, schools in Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow have revised their timings for students’ safety. As per the revised order, classes for students from Class 1 to 8 in council-run schools will now be conducted from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm, starting April 21. Teachers will be required to remain in schools until 1:30 pm.

Jharkhand School Timings Revised

Jharkhand has revised school timings across the state starting April 21 due to rising temperatures and heat wave-like conditions. The decision has been taken to protect students from extreme heat during peak daytime hours. The new schedule applies to all government, aided, unaided, and private schools until further notice. Under the new directive from the education department, students from Kindergarten to Class 8 will attend school from 7:00 am to 11:30 am, while Classes 9 to 12 will continue until 12:00 noon.
