A total of 7 states and UTs including Kerala, Punjab, Chandigarh, and Maharashtra have attained Level 2 as per Performance Grading Index 2020-21 report.

NEW DELHI: Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh have emerged as the three new top performing states in education, according to the Performance Grading Index (PGI) report for the year 2020-21 released by the Ministry of Education. A total of seven states and union territories have attained the highest grade so far, Level 2, including Kerala, Punjab, Chandigarh, and Maharashtra.
Ladakh has made a significant improvement in PGI from Level 8 to Level 4 in 2020-21 and improved its score by 299 points in 2020-21 as compared to 2019-20 resulting in the highest ever improvement in a single year.

PGI 2020-21 classified the states and UTs into ten grades wherein the highest achievable grade is Level 1, which is for state or UT scoring more than 950 points out of a total of 1000 points. The lowest grade is Level 10 which is for score below 551.
The PGI structure comprises 1000 points across 70 indicators grouped into 2 categories, Outcomes, and Governance Management (GM). These categories are further divided into five domains including Learning Outcomes (LO), Access (A), Infrastructure& Facilities (IF), Equity (E) and Governance Process (GP).
“The ultimate aim of PGI is to propel states and UTs towards undertaking multi-pronged interventions that will bring about the much-desired optimal education outcomes covering all dimensions. The PGI is expected to help States and UTs to pinpoint the gaps and accordingly prioritize areas for intervention to ensure that the school education system is robust at every level,” read an official statement.

Earlier in June, the education ministry released Performance Grading Index for Districts, PGI-D 2019-20 report, as per which at least 3 districts from Rajasthan,Sikar, Jhunjhunu and Jaipur scored more than 80% in school education performance and achieved ‘Utkarsh’ grade which is the second highest grade.
