NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting on May 1 to deliberate on the issues and reforms in the education sector, including National Education Policy (NEP), and the use of technology in learning.

“To achieve all these goals and to ensure efficient educational governance extensive use of technology including artificial intelligence will be promoted,” said the general statement on the meeting, recorded on Modi’s website.

The discussions gave consideration to “early childhood care and education, foundational literacy and numeracy, adapting contemporary pedagogy, preserving the cultural and linguistic diversity of India with a special focus on early vocationalization of education”.

The delibrations involved use and promotion of technology in various modes for education at school and higher levels. These modes include online platforms, educational portals, TV channels, radio, podcasts etc.

In view of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown, the government has been actively promoting online education through internet-based digital platforms and broadcasting educational content on TV through dedicated education channels.

International education agencies such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have recommended strengthening remote and distance learning education models to deal with learning loss and disruption in education such as those caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in the world.
