PM Modi inaugurates IIM Guwahati's temporary campus; MBA programme to start from 2026-27

IIM Guwahati has launched an executive MBA programme, with the regular MBA set to begin in 2026–27. It is the second IIM in the Northeast and the 22nd in India.
Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the academic session of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM Guwahati), marking the strengthening of higher education opportunities in Assam and the formal commencement of its academic activities. The institute has launched its executive education programme, while its regular MBA programme is scheduled to start from the 2026-27 academic year.
IIM Guwahati's inaugural academic session is currently being held at a temporary transit campus at Tech City, Pongora, spread over an area of 6,410 sq m. The institute will later shift to its permanent campus, which is under development at Marapita in Kamrup district, spread over an area of 76.83 hectares.
This is the second IIM in the Northeast and the 22nd IIM in India. The first IIM in the Northeast is IIM Shillong .
The Union Cabinet of India has approved Rs 555 crore for setting up a temporary campus, constructing a permanent campus and supporting the institution's operations in the first five years. The purpose of this fund is to ensure the smooth development and operation of the new management institute.
IIM Guwahati MBA admission 2026
The executive education programme has been designed by the mentoring institute, the Indian Institute of Management ( IIM Ahmedabad ), and government officials from Assam are forming the first batch. This programme aims to improve leadership and management skills among public officials.
“It is a great moment for the Northeast with the inauguration of IIM Guwahati. This will improve education facilities in the region and attract students from across the country,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.
He added that the institute will play a key role in expanding access to quality management education and building academic capacity in the Northeast.
With the start of academic activities, IIM Guwahati is expected to expand access to management education in the Northeast and contribute to the development of professionals and future leaders from this region.
