President dissolves ‘MCI’; Govt appoints 7 member BoG to perform Council’s functioning

NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 26: The President of India has dissolved the Medical Council of India (MCI) and has appointed a Board of Governors (BoG) to perform functioning of the Council. The Government of India has appointed a seven-member Committee comprising of experts from the medical field.

Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley making the announcement said that the President Ram Nath Kovind has signed an ordinance to set up a committee to run the Medical Council of India till a bill which seeks to replace the body with a new commission is passed by Parliament.

National Medical Commission is pending in the Parliament, which seeks to replace the MCI.

Jaitley speaking to reporters said that the Union Cabinet has cleared the ordinance this morning and the President has now given his ascent.

As per the notification the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Ordinance 2018, “the Medical Council of India shall stand superseded and the President, Vice President and other members of the Council shall vacate their offices and shall have no claim for any compensation, whatsoever.”

The central Government has constituted a seven-member Board of Governors under the Chairmanship of V K Paul, Member, NITI Aayog. The Members of the BoG include Dr. Randeep Guleria, Director, AIIMS New Delhi; Dr. Jagat Ram, Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh; Dr. B N Gangadhar, Director, NIMHANS Bangalore; Dr. Nikhil Tandon, AIIMS New Delhi; Dr. S. Venkatesh, DGHS, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Dr. Balram Bhargava, Director, Indian Council for Medical Research, New Delhi.
