Resident doctors' associations back students, seek accountability over NEET UG irregularities

Several resident doctors' associations from medical colleges across the country have extended support to students demanding accountability over the alleged NEET UG paper leak and have called for comprehensive reforms in India's examination system.

The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) shared on X that resident doctors' associations across India are demanding accountability for the alleged NEET UG paper leak under its banner.

In separate statements and representations issued over the past few days, resident doctors' bodies from Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and West Bengal urged the Centre to ensure transparency in the conduct of national entrance examinations, fix responsibility for alleged irregularities, and introduce measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

KEM MARD stands with students demanding justice

The King Edward Memorial Hospital Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (KEM MARD), in a press note dated July 18, said it stands in solidarity with students across the country seeking transparency, accountability and meaningful educational reforms.

The association said, "As resident doctors, we have personally experienced the challenges and uncertainty associated with highly competitive examinations such as NEET. Examination irregularities, including paper leaks and other systemic lapses, have undermined merit, eroded public trust, and caused immense distress to countless students.”

The association called upon the Government of India to ensure accountability at every level, conduct a fair and transparent investigation into all examination-related irregularities and implement robust safeguards to protect the integrity of national examinations.

KEM MARD also expressed concern over the recent developments involving activist Sonam Wangchuk during his protest, saying healthcare professionals' foremost concern is his health, safety and dignity. It added that the situation should be resolved peacefully through dialogue.

The association said, “India’s students deserve an education system founded on fairness, transparency, merit and integrity. KEM MARD stands with every student seeking justice, accountability and meaningful educational reform.”

AMU RDA seeks thorough NEET investigation, NTA reforms

The Resident Doctors' Association (RDA), Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, said the alleged NEET examination paper leak had caused distress among lakhs of aspirants and affected the credibility of one of the country's most important entrance examinations.

The AMU doctors' body also urged the government to undertake comprehensive reforms within the National Testing Agency (NTA) to improve transparency, accountability, security and efficiency in the conduct of national-level examinations.

The RDA said, "We respectfully request the Government of India to ensure a thorough investigation, identify all individuals involved, and take strict legal action against those responsible.”

HRDA Telangana seeks independent NEET probe

Similarly, the Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association (HRDA), Telangana, sought an independent, impartial investigation into the reported irregularities in the NEET UG examination. In its representation, the association said repeated controversies surrounding national entrance examinations had shaken the confidence of students, parents and the medical community.

HRDA requested the government to order an independent probe, take strict legal action against those involved in examination malpractice, fix accountability at every level, including within the NTA, and introduce comprehensive reforms to strengthen the security, transparency and credibility of national entrance examinations.

RG Kar RDA condemns force against protesting doctors

Meanwhile, the Resident Doctors Association, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, condemned the reported use of force against resident doctors and medical students during recent protests concerning education reforms.

The association mentioned in a press release, "The reports and visuals are deeply concerning. Healthcare professionals and students, who dedicate themselves to serving society, deserve to be treated with dignity, safety and respect. Violence against doctors has no place in a democratic society."

The RG Kar RDA called on the authorities to conduct a fair inquiry, ensure accountability for any excessive use of force, protect healthcare professionals participating in peaceful demonstrations and resolve the issues through constitutional means and dialogue.

The statements from these resident doctors' associations come as demands for greater transparency, accountability and reforms in the conduct of national entrance examinations continue to gain support from sections of the medical fraternity.
